LONDON – The Archpriest of Westminster Abbey personally intervened on Buckingham Palace to ask that Elton John sing at Princess Diana’s funeral. “It would be a creative and generous choice to millions of people who personally feel in mourning for the death of Lady D,” wrote Reverend Wesley Carr in 1997 to Queen Elizabeth’s collaborators at the royal palace, hoping that during the funeral service in the abbey the popular rock start could interpret “Candle in the wind”, the song originally inspired by Marylin Monroe which she had just rewritten with verses dedicated to Diana with the new title of “England’s role”, rose of England.
