The Seconds of the Crusaders’ Sword Discovery in Israel

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

A diver finds sword ancient thought to be a weapon of the Crusades, off the coast of Haifa, Israel.

The sword is said to be around 900 years old, which was used by the knights in the historic war.

Shlomi Katzin, an amateur diver, found the sword at the bottom of the Mediterranean while diving off the coast of Carmel, in northern Israel.

It also saw other objects around the sword of the Crusades, including metal anchors, stone anchors and broken pottery.

Katzin retrieved the sword from the seabed fearing that the find would be stolen or carried away by waves or undersea currents.

The law in Israel is known to require that any finds of antiquities be returned to the state.

Then, he brought the sword ashore and rushed to the Robbery Prevention Unit, Israel Antiquities Authority to report his discovery.

For his findings and reports he was awarded a certificate of appreciation for “Good Citizens.”

Experts say that the ancient sword may have been found after a sand shear caused by a storm in the past few days in Israel.

The sword has a length of 4 feet or about 120 centimeters, and weighs 1.8 kilograms. On the body of the sword there is marine debris attached to almost all parts, but the condition of the sword is still in perfect shape.

The site where the anchor and sword was found has been monitored by the Israel Antiquities Authority, or IAA. The treasure of the crusades site is difficult to understand because it often appears and disappears with the movement of sand, according to reports Jewish Press.

“Ancient discoveries by recreational swimmers and divers are a growing phenomenon in recent years, with the increasing popularity of the sport,” said Kobi Sharvit, Director of the IAA’s Marine Archeology Unit.
