The second wave will be there at the end of October in Côte-d’Or, according to simulations from the CHU

There is talk of a second wave, almost since the start of the epidemic. More than four months after the de-containment, the fear becomes reality confirms Nadiège Baeille, the director of the University Hospital Center (CHU) of Dijon:

From the second half of October until the end of the year

“Very clearly, we have been preparing for it for several weeks. For us this is not just a hypothesis, we will have to face an increase in the number of hospitalizations.” In terms of timing, the latest estimates give us just another month of breathing space. “There are simulations at our disposal, made by the Institut Pasteur, which are territorialized by the Regional Health Agency. Today, estimates tend to be more in the second half of October, until the end of October. year.”

Cross-country race against virus

Obviously, this second wave will be different, in a context where despite everything, the Côte-d’Oriens will be better prepared, and hospital services as well. “We are more armed”, confirms Nadiège Baille. “In terms of personal protective equipment, resuscitation beds, respirators. We also believe that all the barrier measures put in place will make it possible to limit the height of the wave that we unfortunately experienced in the spring. We expect quite a significant increase this winter, but hopefully lower, especially on resuscitation. “

It scares us

In this context, the new restrictions announced by the government, even if they are not very restrictive in Côte-d’Or, are welcome for the director of the CHU: “We have everything but want to relive what we lived from February to June, it was very difficult. It scares us, objectively, to return to this situation. We will have what is more to face the winter episodes, and we especially do not want to deprogram other reasons for hospitalization. ”

Reference to the epidemic of seasonal flu which could well also saturate the emergency services and resuscitation. The opportunity for Nadiège Baille to recall this message: “We would like to avoid hospitalizing too many patients for the flu. For the coronavirus, for the moment, there is no vaccine. For the flu, there is one. So get yourself vaccinated! It could avoid saturation. ”

Recruitment

While waiting for this second wave, the CHU is preparing. “We are going to open additional beds from the beginning of November. We do it every year but this year we are anticipating it. And then we have planned to open additional intensive care beds if necessary. We have anticipated the recruitments, even if it is difficult to recruit at the moment in the health sector. Since July, we have been anticipating 150 more people for the single covid episode, and specific recruitments for the screening drive, 90 people. it is relatively significant, is it enough? It will all be tested by the epidemic. “
