The second generation of the Steam Deck portable console will not arrive until the end of 2025 at the earliest
Valve doesn’t just want to add power at the cost of less battery life
Earlier, representatives of the Valve company let it be known that they would like to launch the second generation of the successful pocket “console” Steam Deck in the future. However, they also made it quite clear that this will not happen in the coming years. In addition, one of the authors of the portable device, Pierre-Loup Griffais, has now specified that fans will most likely not see it until the end of 2025, if not later. The company from the American city of Bellevue would like to offer a significant jump in performance without having to sacrifice battery life.
Stamina plays a premium
“We consider it important that game developers can work with a fixed performance limit in the case of Deck. Then we want to send a clear message to the players that they will play the same games on any Deck,” said Griffais in an email to The Verge magazine, saying that at the same time Valve does not want to offer higher performance only at the cost of worse energy optimization and lower battery life. “I do not expect that these conditions can be met in the coming years,” Griffais concluded.
Don’t overlook
We won’t see The Elder Scrolls VI anytime soon, PlayStation owners will be in for a treat
However, some players are worried that the current Steam Deck will soon no longer have enough power to run the latest titles. The device is already suffocating in demanding or poorly optimized games, which include, for example, the remake of The Last of Us, the shooter Redfall or the recently released space RPG Starfield.
Same Performance, New Steam Deck?
However, this does not rule out the arrival of an improved Steam Deck, which would offer the same performance as its predecessor, but boast, for example, lower weight, longer battery life or a better display. After all, the battery and the screen are among the key areas that the creators want to focus on in the event of a generational change. For example, variable refresh rate displays can create a smoother gaming experience without requiring a more powerful chipset. However, only time will tell if Valve will eventually go in this direction or surprise players with some unexpected solution.
