The Second Carbon Capture Project: ADNOC’s Efforts in Carbon Sequestration and Enhanced Oil Recovery at Habshan Facility

The second carbon capture project

Despite ADNOC’s ambitious goal of carbon sequestration, this prevents a small portion of its emissions from reaching the atmosphere. The company produces 24 million tons of carbon dioxide annually in oil and gas exploration and production. Also, ADNOC’s accounts do not cover the emissions issued by its customers during the burning of the oil and gas it produces.

Last September, the company announced its second carbon capture project, which will block carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere at the Habshan natural gas processing facility and pump it into crude oil wells, where it will be used to increase production in a process known as enhanced oil recovery.

Once completed, this project will increase ADNOC’s carbon capture capacity to 2.3 million tons annually.

The company also has a smaller project to move carbon emissions from a steel mill and inject gas into an oil field.

ADIPEC discusses the climate

ADNOC is exploring other sources of carbon dioxide in Abu Dhabi that could be captured and reused or stored permanently, Musabih Al Kaabi, ADNOC’s chief executive of low carbon solutions and international growth, said in an interview last month.

This week the company is holding its major annual petroleum conference, ADIPEC, which this year is likely to be largely filled with climate discussions. ADNOC often announces the award of contracts for its ongoing projects during ADIPEC.
