The second block of Temelín is being produced again, the beginning of the shutdown was hastened by the storm

CEZ is preparing another planned shutdown in the last quarter of this year at the Dukovany nuclear power plant, said Petr Šuleř, head of ČEZ’s nuclear communications department.

During the shutdown in Temelín, the power engineers changed a quarter of the fuel, checked the reactor, safety systems and the turbine. They planned several dozen investment projects, performed almost 15,000 activities. The power engineers also inspected the protective building around the reactor.

The second Temelín unit started to generate electricity at a reactor output of 50%. Energy companies are now awaiting tests at 80 percent of power to verify how power is distributed. They also monitor other technologies in the nuclear and non-nuclear parts.

“Hundreds of millimeters decide when operating the entire turboset. Now the first days of operation will show whether the settings still need to be fine-tuned, ”said Jan Kruml, director of the Temelín power plant.

According to the power plant management, the start of the shutdown was difficult. It started a week earlier, because after the storm, three pylons of a particularly high voltage line between the Kočín power plant and substation fell. As Kruml stated, it was not just a matter of postponing the deadline.

“We had to reschedule the schedule, which is usually prepared for months, in a matter of days and provide suppliers for new dates,” said Kruml.

Temelín is the largest producer of electricity in the country, covering about a fifth of domestic consumption. CEZ put the power plant into operation in December 2000. Last year, Temelín produced 15.75 terawatt hours (TWh), this year from the beginning of the year 9.2 TWh.
