The National Assembly will attempt to elect a president and start work after the institution reached an unprecedented stalemate yesterday. The two largest parliamentary groups – GERB and “Continuing the change” – entered into a war of position, refusing to withdraw from their candidacies, and the vote of the other groups did not allow them to gather the necessary majority.

The election of the leadership is an express requirement of the Constitution to establish the parliament. After that, parliamentary groups must also be announced, which allows the procedure for airing a regular government to be started.

As the vote for the chairman must end at the opening of the plenary session, MEPs interrupted the meeting yesterday. So today they will formally continue their first meeting.

Despite being “first among equals”, the President of the National Assembly is a key figure, as he has a role in determining the legislative program of the deputies, allowing debates and hearings of ministers, etc. According to the protocol, he is the highest ranking statesman in Bulgaria.
