Chicago (USA), Jan 19 (EFE).- The Seattle Storm, franchise of the WNBA (the women’s basketball league in the United States), announced this Thursday that they will retire the number 10 jersey of the legendary player Sue Bird in a ceremony scheduled for June 11 at the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle.
Bird, who played 19 seasons in Seattle, thus becomes the second Storm player to receive this honor, after Lauren Jackson.
The 42-year-old guard ended her legendary career last season, after a 21-year career in which she won four WNBA titles and five Olympic gold medals. She also achieved the absolute record for assists in the WNBA, with 3,234.
Bird is the only player who has been able to win WNBA titles in three separate decades (2000, 2010 and 2020). She was a champion with the Storm in 2004, 2010, 2014 and 2020.
To her sporting successes, Bird has added an important social commitment, by leading battles for gender equality and the promotion of women’s sports.
In addition, in 2020 he raised his voice to sensitize the country about racial discrimination, after the death of George Floyd, suffocated by a police officer in Minneapolis (Minnesota, USA).
She faced, and continues to face, this fight, supported by her partner Megan Rapinoe, one of the best soccer players ever for the United States women’s team.
They both live in Seattle, where Rapinoe just renewed her contract for a season with the Reign.
