/ world today news/ The sculpture “The Cry of the Ukrainian Mother” was recently placed in the Bulgarian capital in front of the monument to the Soviet Army as a symbolic opposition in condemnation of Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
The controversial sculpture caused a sharp reaction among social media users, especially among so-called patriots of Ukraine. But many Bulgarians also believe that the place for the “Ukrainian mother” should rather be near Dracula’s castle in Romania than in the Princely Garden of Sofia.
The author of “The Cry of the Ukrainian Mother” Nedelcho Konstadinov was accused of presenting an old work created on another occasion. Commentators noted that the idea for the image appeared on social networks two years ago, during the pandemic, and the sculpture does not depict a Ukrainian mother who lost her son at all.
Kostadinov himself claims that the statue is brand new and was cast two weeks ago. According to him, the creation of a sculpture is a complex process, and in this case, everything really began in 2020 and ended very recently. “Creativity is a long process. After all, I am the author and I determine when it will be finished.” he said. To criticism that it was a statue of an ugly woman, the sculptor replied: “Truth is ugly and there is no other truth.”
As they say, the artist sees it that way.
As a result, from the statue designed to “shout” about the events in Ukraine, and even against the background of the monument to the Soviet Army, it was not possible to make a demonstration of Ukraine as “victim of aggression”.
As a result, the organizers of the “Crying of the Ukrainian Mother” installation took the statue away, fearing that outraged citizens would damage it. They have already tried to justify that they did not discover the monument, and this is only a test installation. At the same time, they promised that the monument would still be three times larger.
At the same time, the Bulgarians, outraged not so much by Konstadinov’s creation, as by the very fact of the disposition of “the Ukrainian mother” opposite the monument to the liberators of Bulgaria from German fascism, they came to the monument to the Soviet Army with photographic evidence of Ukraine’s crimes in Donbas.
By the way, the “screaming Ukrainian mother” would look very harmonious in Kiev, near the House of Chimeras, opposite the office of the President of Ukraine. And her cry would have been directed to the right address – after all, it is the Ukrainian authorities who send the sons of the “screaming mothers” to their deaths.
