The Screams of Mothers to Warteg Traders When Cooking Oil Prices Soared… Page all

DEPOK, KOMPAS.com – The government revoked the regulation regarding the highest retail price (HET) cooking oil premium or packaging last week. This means that the price of cooking oil is returned to the market mechanism.

Previously, the government set the HET for packaged cooking oil at Rp. 14,000. However, this turned out to have an impact on the very limited stock of packaged cooking oil in the market.

According to monitoring Kompas.com In a mini market in Depok City, the stock of cooking oil in the storefront is limited so it runs out quickly when the government implements the HET.

Now, the display case which has five levels seems to be filled with two liters of cooking oil packaging. It says the price of packaged cooking oil is IDR 42,000 per two liters.

Surprised that the stock was overflowing after HET was revoked

One of the buyers, Tanti (51), admitted that she was surprised when she wanted to pick up cooking oil at the mini market because the stock immediately overflowed when the price went up.

“When the price was normal, suddenly there were a lot of stock lined up on the shelves. I was surprised,” said Tanti, Friday (18/3/2022).

Tanti admitted that she had experienced queuing up to scramble to get packaged cooking oil at a price of Rp. 14,000 per liter.

“Yesterday, when the price of cooking oil was cheap, there was no stock in the store at all. Once there was one, you had to stand in line and fight,” he said.

Even so, Tanti still buys four two-liter packaged cooking oil for the fasting month, which will fall in April.

“I bought a lot to hang out with my relatives. Because I wanted to fast, I bought a lot,” he said.

Another minimarket visitor, Dewi (39), admitted she was reluctant to buy cooking oil because the price had returned to high prices.

“Now that the price has gone up, I don’t buy it because it’s expensive. I just feel weird, how come it’s suddenly full on the shelves,” he concluded.

Before the government revoked the HET, Dewi admitted that she had bought cooking oil even though she had to stand in line.

“Before, I bought packaged cooking oil for Rp. 28,000 per two liters. I’ve bought it until I stand in line, but I still get it, but you can only buy one package,” he said.

The astonishment of the citizens

Leha (45) was confused by the current situation.

“It’s not rare, why is the price like that? It was cheap but it was rare, how come it’s expensive, how come there are so many stocks?” said Leha when met at Bidara Cina, Jatinegara, East Jakarta, Friday.

Leha said that when oil prices were still low, it was difficult for her to find these commodities.

“I live in Pasar Rebo, but I looked for it as far as Mangga Besar yesterday,” said Leha.

Leha hopes that the price of cooking oil will decline again.

The same hope was also expressed by Anggi (35), a shop owner in the Pulogadung area, East Jakarta.

“Think about what people from the lower classes are like. Shall we eat it boiled?” said Anggi.

As a seller of cooking oil, Anggi has not dared to stock up on a lot of goods.

“Because apart from the high price of cooking oil, customers may not know the price evenly,” said Anggi.

One of the housewives in Rawa Bunga, Jatinegara, Dwi Lestari (40), said that the rising price of cooking oil made it difficult for people with low incomes.

“It’s very, very inconvenient for residents, of course, especially those with a weak economy,” said Dwi via written message.

Dwi pleaded with the government to stabilize the price of basic necessities, especially cooking oil.

“I beg the government to help the residents, stabilize the prices of all basic necessities,” said Dwi.
