In Sofia, the average reached BGN 650, but in 12 districts it cannot exceed BGN 500.
932 thousand people are at the minimum
The average pension in Sofia reached BGN 650.19 in 2021. In just one year, it rose by BGN 115 and is significantly ahead of the income of pensioners in other districts.
Sofians take BGN 200 more than pensioners in Razgrad, Silistra and Kardzhali. In no district outside the capital can the average pension exceed BGN 600. Last year it was for the country

The next richest pensioners are in Burgas, where the average pension is BGN 599.81.
They take BGN 8 less in Pernik. In Varna they receive an average of BGN 568.61. The top 5 is supplemented by Stara Zagora with BGN 566.69.
In Plovdiv and Smolyan the average pension is BGN 524, and these two districts are ahead of Kyustendil, Vratsa and Sofia district.
However, pensions cannot exceed BGN 500 in 12 districts – Blagoevgrad, Vidin, Kardzhali, Lovech, Montana, Pazardzhik, Pleven, Razgrad, Silistra, Dobrich, Targovishte and Shumen. The lowest is in Razgrad – BGN 440.56, they are 20 cents richer in Kardzhali. In Silistra it is BGN 447.
Men receive BGN 123 more than women
The average pension of the military and police is BGN 895.02. Men on average received BGN 911.1, which is BGN 214.29 more than women in uniform.
The disability pension is BGN 399.21, and for seniority and age – BGN 566.92.
In the first three months of last year, the average pension was BGN 509.39, and the bonus was then BGN 50. The supplement of BGN 120, which was introduced for the last three months of 2021, managed to raise the average pension to 536 , BGN 71
Without the bonuses, it was BGN 459.39 at the beginning of 2021, and at the end it has already reached BGN 481.24.
932,005 people have received minimum pensions, and 533 thousand are those for length of service and age.
Last year, 818,729 pensioners received up to BGN 300. 345,370 are those with pensions between BGN 300 and 350. 148,960 are pensioners with incomes between BGN 500 and 600.
Between BGN 1,200 and 1,440 was the amount of 57,697 people. The ceiling (BGN 1,440 last year) has limited 26,833 retirees.
The new retirees in 2021 were 88,264 people, which was 4,000 more than the previous year. Only 575 are retired military and police officers.
Only 20 are new retirees with
first category of labor. Out of a total of 1.526 million personal pensions in 2021, only 1%, or 15,824, are for this category. It includes miners, divers, pilots, paratroopers and others.
35,692 people are pensioners who have managed to meet the conditions for the second category, and the new ones are 72. Here are bus drivers, Whatmans, workers working with hazardous chemicals, and more.
Half of the retirees have experience only in the lowest – third category of work. 722 thousand people are mixed.
There are 422,005 with a personal disability pension. The largest group is between 50 and 70% of the disabled – 170,934 people. In the category between 71 and 90% are 162,942, and with over 90% disabilities are about 87 thousand.
697,410 took widow’s allowances, which are 26.5% of the deceased spouse’s pension. 66,382 people received BGN 111.53 each for foreign aid.
Expenditures for pensions in 2021 were BGN 14.249 billion. At the end of last year, the state transferred BGN 750 million for the bonuses of pensioners of BGN 60. They will be paid by June. Another 100 million were allocated for one-time allowances of BGN 75, which are given to vaccinated pensioners.
This year, pensions will increase by 6.1% under Swiss rule. Until July 1, the minimum pension will be BGN 370, and after that date it will be BGN 392.57. The old-age social pension for the first six months will be BGN 170, and then it will be raised to BGN 180.37. The pension ceiling however, BGN 1,500 will remain throughout the year. The government also plans to stop COVID supplements from July, but by that date it should be ready to reform.
