Anyone who looked outside shortly before nightfall probably noticed: the sky turned completely purple. A beautiful spectacle that was captured in photos by several people. Weatherman Donny de Koning explains how this is possible.
The explanation is simple, says the weatherman. “We saw the sun setting on the horizon. So it illuminated the clouds. It gives a beautiful image.”
De Koning emphasizes that it is not about the rare mother-of-pearl clouds, which can sometimes be seen at this time of year. “They occur at very high altitudes at temperatures of at least -80 degrees. For these stratospheric clouds to form, the air must be extremely cold at about 25 kilometers. This does not happen so quickly above the Netherlands,” the weatherman explains.
On Friday evening there was ‘just’ a beautiful purple sky above our province. To see pearly clouds, you need to be more lucky. “The conditions are right. They may be visible in the coming days.”
Below you can see some of the beautiful pictures.
