The Science Behind Dopamine and the Need to Just Chill: Finding Balance in Today’s Fast-Paced World

Just chill

You prefer to lie on the couch, open your favorite bag of chips, turn on one of the many Netflix series you are following, while scrolling through Instagram and TikTok in the meantime. Somewhere deep down you know that this lifestyle does not contribute to the goals you have set for yourself. But you know what? Those goals can wait. Today you will at least chill out and look for short-term fun.

What is Dopamine?

To understand where this behavior comes from, it is important to explain what dopamine is. You can think of it as a messenger in your brain, also called a neurotransmitter. Dopamine is involved in important functions in your body, such as moving, feeling emotions, getting motivated and regulating your sleep rhythm.

The substance is therefore crucial to feel good and to survive. For example, dopamine causes you to repeat behaviors that are beneficial to your survival. You can think of it as an evolutionary reward system that encourages you to perform essential tasks, such as eating, drinking, reproducing and social interaction.
