The Science Behind Cravings for Fatty Foods and Alcohol Absorption

Vette hap

Harriëtte Koop of the Trimbos Institute explains: “Alcohol can stimulate the appetite. Appetite arises because alcohol stimulates the acid production of the stomach. In this case, you may experience cravings for fatty foods. Eating fatty foods is of course never entirely good, but it can’t really hurt to actually eat something fatty.”

The Nutrition Center adds: “We don’t know exactly why we feel like it, but it could have to do with the way alcohol is absorbed into your body. Alcohol is absorbed through the stomach wall and small intestine. And eating something beforehand slows down the absorption of alcohol, making it less likely to enter your system. Eating a little fat slows down the passage to the intestines a little, but it is not much.”

Good fats

“That doesn’t have to mean ‘fries with’,” says the Nutrition Center. Oops. “You can also choose good fats such as avocado, oily fish, olive oil and nuts.”

And why do we want that hamburger with the fat still dripping off it? “The fact that we are more likely to go for that fatty, salty bite after a drink may also be because we as humans naturally prefer fatty and salty food. So that only works – a little – if you eat it before you drink.”

Breaking down alcohol

Taking that fatty bite when the alcohol is already in your blood will not help you absorb the alcohol more slowly. The Trimbos Institute agrees with this: “The breakdown of alcohol cannot be accelerated. Food has no influence on the breakdown of alcohol. Food does influence the absorption of alcohol in the blood. In particular, the presence of protein-rich food in the stomach slows down its absorption into the blood.”
