The games of the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga for the 2023/2024 season have been precisely scheduled since this Friday. But what about the 3rd division? Which team is playing against whom?
The waiting of many fans is finally over, because soon football will be played again in Germany’s top leagues. The German Football League (DFL) published the fixture lists for the Bundesliga and the second division this Friday. The start of the Bundesliga is on August 18, when FC Bayern, as the current champions, take on Werder Bremen. On the third weekend in August, runners-up Borussia Dortmund also plays against 1. FC Köln.
The 2nd Bundesliga begins three weeks earlier – on July 28th. First game: Hamburger SV against Bundesliga relegated FC Schalke. But what about the 3rd division? When will the schedule for the 2023/2024 season be available in this league?
The overall schedule for the sixteenth season of the 3rd division has not yet been published. On the website of the German Football Association (DFB) in a Q&A on the subject of the schedule it says that the “usually around three weeks before the start of the season” happens. First of all, the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 schedules have to be awaited.
However: The start of the season in the 3rd league is already certain, since the framework calendar with the key data was already adopted in winter. It starts on the weekend of August 4, 2023. The winter break is from December 21, 2023 to January 19, 2024. There are 38 match days in total, with the last one being on Saturday May 18, 2024.
That means it won’t be long before fans know which 3rd division teams will meet and when. The Q&A on the website continues: “The exact times in the 3rd division will be determined by the DFB usually made and published three to five working days after the DFL deadlines for the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2.” So the schedule could come in the next few days.
Why is the 3rd division schedule so late?
According to the DFB, this is due to the fact that when planning the schedule for the 3rd league, safety aspects must be taken into account in the travel routes of fans, including those from the higher leagues – i.e. the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga – as well as parallel events on site . In addition, you have to know the relevant framework conditions from the higher leagues, otherwise the game would be postponed at short notice, according to the DFB website. That in turn would lead to complications for the fans.
How does a regular game day go?
A standard game day in the 3rd division runs from Friday to Sunday, there is no longer a Monday game for the 2023/2024 season. There will be one game on Friday evening (probably between 6 p.m. and 8.30 p.m.), then five on Saturday (every 2 p.m.), the top game on Saturday evening (probably between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.). There will be three games on Sunday (1.30pm or 2pm, 4.30pm and 7.30pm). On a weekly match day, there are also five games on Tuesday and five on Wednesday (all at 7 p.m.). On the final day of the season, all ten games will be played at the same time.
