Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The scandal hit the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Kristalina Georgieva. This is related to his previous position at the World Bank where he reportedly pressured his staff to change reports in order to raise the rating China.
This was revealed in a World Bank investigation report, at the end of October 2017. At that time, World Bank President Jim Kim and Georgieva, then CEO, asked staff to update the methodology with respect to China in the “World Bank’s Doing Business” report.
Kim did so after discussing the rankings with senior Chinese officials who were dismayed by the country’s rankings. Beijing complained about being ranked 78th on the list in 2017.
In addition, next year’s report suggests that Beijing will fall even further. As a result of pressure from China, Kim and Georgieva put pressure on their staff to try to increase China’s ranking in 2018 by seven places, the same as the previous year.
“Georgieva denounced a senior World Bank official for mishandling the Bank’s relationship with China and failing to appreciate the importance of the Doing Business report to the country,” the report said.
In addition to China, the investigation also found “inappropriate changes” in the 2020 report that affected the rankings of a number of countries. This relates to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Azerbaijan.
This report was taken seriously by the United States (US). The US Department of Finance in a statement stated that they will also analyze the report.
“Our primary responsibility is to uphold the integrity of international financial institutions,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, this allegation was emphatically rejected by Georgieva. He said the findings damaged his reputation and provided the basis for Washington’s longstanding criticism of multilateral organizations and their treatment of China.
“I fundamentally disagree with the findings and interpretation of the Data Deviation Investigation regarding my role in the World Bank’s Doing Business 2018 report,” he said in a statement.
