Dresden. Rotten branches of trees are currently piling up at the Zwingerteich and workers are removing them from the treetops using the lifting platform. They have been using their chainsaws for several days.
This is necessary for traffic safety so that passers-by are not endangered, explains Uli Kretzschmar, spokesman for Schlösserland Sachsen. Next week the arborists will be active on the other side of the kennel pond on the wall, for example to remove mistletoe from trees.
Gloria Ziller follows the action very closely. After all, she lives directly opposite in the new building at the Duchess Garden and does her Nordic walking laps here almost every day to the Elbe and back.
She asks why no new trees are being planted. “Since no trees are felled, this is not necessary,” explains Kretzschmar. In addition, trees are only allowed to be felled in the cold season until the end of February. “Unless it was an emergency,” he explains.
Resident Ziller nevertheless believes it is necessary to plant species of trees that can cope better with the much drier summers with a view to a longer perspective.
If a strong storm sweeps over Dresden again, ailing trees could fall in the Zwingerpark and then action would have to be taken anyway. “So you could start with replacement plantings now,” she advises.
But first of all, Schlösserland spokesman Kretzschmar refers to what his gardeners are currently doing. Around 20,000 flower bulbs are planted in the Great Garden and on the Brühl Terrace.
Fresh pansies are placed on the beds in front of the Sempergalerie in the kennel. The summer season is also being prepared in other parts of the kennel. The kennel fountains are to be put back into operation in April.
Since last year, a new technology has been used to clean the large wells. If this used to be done with a high-pressure cleaner, sludge vacuums have been used since last year.
This brings considerable advantages over the previous practice. Because the high-pressure cleaning was very aggressive for the sandstone. Now the wells are cleaned very gently every month with mud vacuum cleaners. In addition, they do not have to be drained.
The Schlösserland employees take care of many other things in the Zwinger so that the world-famous landmark looks well-groomed. The lawns are mowed regularly. In addition, the oranges will take care of the oranges in the kennel again.
In May they will be fetched from the winter quarters in the Großsedlitz baroque garden and placed in the Zwingerhof, announced Kretzschmar. “But we won’t be able to put up all 76 trees.”
Because the Zwingerhof will be renovated in sections by the end of 2023. Before doing this, archaeologists examine the subsurface. They had started recently before the porcelain collection.
