The San Gennaro Festival: A Culinary and Cultural Celebration in Little Italy

The San Gennaro Festival in Little Italy begins this Thursday, September 14. The event that is recognized for its food, entertainment, and floats, will celebrate its ninth seventh (97th) edition.

The San Gennaro Festival will take place on Mulberry Street between Canal and Houston streets in Lower Manhattan through Sunday, September 24. You can enjoy delicacies such as cannoli, zeppoles, Italian chorizo, among other dishes.

This Italian festival is one of the most anticipated in the Big Apple, and the oldest. It started at the beginning of the 20th century. Italian immigrants settled in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, with each region settling on a different street. The Neapolitans settled on Mulberry Street.

Neapolitan Festival

In 1926, the Neapolitans decided to maintain their traditions, they organized a one-day festival for their patron saint and protector of Naples, San Gennaro. This event continued year after year, and has now become an icon of New York. The festival lasts 11 days and spans 11 blocks in the Little Italy neighborhood.

For generations, this holiday has always been important to the Little Italy area, not only representing the saint himself but also the Italians who arrived at that time, the culture and their traditions.

Every day for the next almost two weeks, you will be able to walk the streets filled with people and food from 11 am to 10 pm.
