The saint of good news

Every January 24, Saint Francis de Sales (1567–1622), bishop of Geneva, doctor of the Church and patron of the Salesian Family (D. Bosco is the founder) and also of writers and journalists, is celebrated. But why is Saint Francis de Sales the patron saint of journalists? Francis was born in Savoy, France. He studied at various universities and in 1591, he received a doctorate in law and two years later he was ordained a priest. His great communication skills led him to be a preacher in the pulpits of Paris. Since his ordination as Bishop of Geneva, Saint Francis de Sales devoted himself intensely to writing spiritual books. Some of his most notable works are ‘Introduction to the devout life’, the twelve books of the ‘Treatise on the love of God’, ‘Sermons’ and ‘Letters’.

In his “Introduction to the Devout Life,” he emphasizes that the Christian life must be lived in different ways, depending on the profession and situation of each person. So that holiness can be achieved in any job, on the street, in the factory or in any occupation. A concept that other spiritual authors have developed, among which Saint Josemaría Escrivá stands out. He had a great passion for letters, so when he tried to convert the Protestants, seeing that they did not come to listen to him, he came up with the innovative initiative of preparing brochures that he left at night on the doors of their houses. Saint Francis was beatified by the Pope Alexander VII in 1661, and the same Pope canonized him in 1665, 43 years after his death. In 1877 he received the title of Doctor of the Church for his literary and personal career. On January 26, 1923, Pius XI named him Patron Saint of journalists and writers in an encyclical entitled ‘Rerum Omniun’. This pope stated that it is necessary for journalists “to imitate and show at all times that rigor has always been linked to moderation and charity, which was the special characteristic of San Francisco” with which he managed to convert many of his fellow citizens.

The saint’s style is reflected in his multiple writings and publications that are perennially current. He also influenced public opinion with words, dedicated his life to writing and stood out for his kindness and closeness; simplicity and clarity of his writings; sweetness and positive spirit. Therefore, it seems to me that it can be said that he is the saint of good news.
