With the entry into service of the tram park and ride, avenue Pierre de Courbertin will no longer be able to accommodate the Sunday market in Saint-Chamand.
The Sunday market in the Saint-Chamand district in Avignon will move. This is the consequence of the commissioning of the new park and ride near the tram terminus: the market will no longer be able to take place on avenue Pierre de Coubertin and will moved about a kilometer, on Avenue de Fontcouverte. It will be installed precisely between the Lac roundabout and the Marie Blachère bakery roundabout.
The date of the move has not yet been determined and will depend on the commissioning of the car park, scheduled for early April. When this is the case, half of the current stands on the market will no longer have room to set up. Hence this decision to move the market, explained during the last city council of Avignon by the Assistant Delegate for Economic and Commercial Development.
“To allow all fairgrounds to continue their activity, the city has studied several sites likely to host this weekly market in optimal safety conditions and without discomfort for local residents”, detailed Claude Tummino. Avenue de Fontcouverte was finally chosen. And the chosen one wants to reassure traders: “The inhabitants of Saint-Chamand represent only barely 10% of customers today since the rest comes from the north of Bouches-du-Rhône. So they are not going to lose customers, on the contrary”. Claude Tummino also ensures that some showmen will benefit from larger sites. A meeting is scheduled in the coming days to record the move.
