The Sahrawi question at the center of an electronic conference at the Moscow University of International Relations

MOSCOW- The Saharawi question was at the center of a digital conference at the Club d’Afrique at the University of International Relations under the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Saharawi Press Agency (SPS) said on Sunday.

In an opening speech of the conference, placed under the slogan “The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR): 45 years of resistance and achievements”, Mr. Aleski Demidov, member of the club organizing the event in coordination with the representation of the Polisario Front in Russia, reaffirmed its willingness to establish ties with the representatives of the Polisario Front in order to highlight the Saharawi question, and this in view of the interest accorded by this foundation to the African continent where the Western Sahara remains the last colony.

He also welcomed the good relations established in recent years between the Russian University of International Relations and the representation of the Polisario Front.

For his part, the lecturer at the Governmental University of Saint Petersburg, Sergei Nikonov spoke about Russia’s position in the Security Council, its support for the principle of self-determination and its firm opposition to unilateral decisions to settle conflicts, as well as the solidarity of Russian civil society with the Sahrawi question.

The occasion was also to discuss the developments of the Saharawi cause, in particular following the return to the armed conflict after the violation by Morocco of the cease-fire agreement, and the position of the new American administration vis-à-vis the decision of former President Donald Trump who recognized Morocco’s “alleged sovereignty” over the occupied territory of Western Sahara.

This conference was an opportunity for the representative of the Polisario Front in Russia, Ali Salem Mohamed Fadhel, who spoke of the resistance and the most important achievements of the Sahrawi state over four decades and highlighted the peaceful resistance that holds good in the occupied part of the Sahrawi territories, while recalling the torture and the blockade practiced and imposed by the Moroccan occupier on the Sahrawi activists, in particular the family of Sultana Kheya.

The Sahrawi diplomat also recalled the rebirth achieved in the human aspect, which is a great achievement for the Sahrawi revolution, other achievements in the social field, the legal battle aimed at putting an end to the plundering of natural resources, as well as other victories on the ground at the military level and others on the international and African scene.

The participants in the conference expressed their wish to see the Sahrawi cause lead to a solution which will ensure the Sahrawi people their legitimate right to self-determination, in accordance with the United Nations Charter.

Registered since 1963 on the list of non-self-governing territories of the United Nations, therefore eligible for the application of resolution 1514 of the UN General Assembly declaring the granting of independence to colonized countries and peoples, Western Sahara is the last colony in Africa, occupied since 1975 by Morocco.
