The sad fate of the “Iļguciems sisters”. Completely outspoken and intimate from a women’s prison

The film “Sisters of Iļguciema” tells of three women in the only prison closed for women in Latvia. They have been convicted of various crimes, one of them for the most serious crime against humanity: the murder of their children.

They are of different ages, different characters and life stories, but they all share their interest in theater, which brings together women in the production of Anton Chekhov’s play “Three Sisters” in the prison theater studio under the direction of Elita Kļaviņa. Professional actors – New Riga Theater actors Kaspars Znotiņš, Āirts Krūmiņš, Ivars Krasts and Andis Strods, as well as Zigurds Neimanis – were invited to participate.

Unlike the prison routine, the environment full of human trust and free from convictions encourages women not only to seek the truth in the role, but also to reveal and tell the truth about themselves, carefully hidden for years, fearing criticism and shame. . It turns out that all three women – just like in Chekhov’s Sisters comedy – are united by a common destiny. In the case of inmates, it is the violence experienced in the family since childhood and youth.

“The film” The Sisters of Iļguciem “makes us ask: Was the violence suffered by women inevitable and the consequences of which led them to prison? Is this not the same crime for which she was punished? These problems are particularly relevant given that violence against women and domestic violence is widespread throughout the European Union and it is estimated that it affects one in three women. In Latvia, compared to other European countries, this indicator is one of the highest among the Member States.
