Why is Grandparents’ Day celebrated in August?

In 1998the non-governmental organization Messengers of Peace established the July 26th like the International Grandparents Dayto commemorate Saint Joachim y Santa Wellparents of the Virgin Mary and therefore grandparents of Jesus.

On the other hand, the United Nations Organization (HIM) pointed to the October 1st as the celebration of International Day of Older Persons; However, although both festivities are similar, they are not the same, since in the latter, it does not matter if the person had children and grandchildren.

Although all this was suggested at an international level, the truth is that Mexico did not adhere to these dates and, like many other countries, launched its own Grandparents Daywhich is officially celebrated on August 28th from 1983 in Mexico City and from now on 1998 in all entities.

This event has undergone several changes over the years, since at first it was called the Day of the Elderlyto later become the National Day of the Elderly and finally the Grandparents Day.
