ARVI can trigger a disease called subacute thyroiditis, or de Quervain’s thyroiditis, inflammation of the thyroid gland, warns Veronika Neudakhina, endocrinologist at SberZdorovye medical company. She warned Russians about this serious problem after a cold in a conversation with Lenta.ru.
According to the endocrinologist, this disease is known to be more common in autumn and winter and is often associated with recent viral infections. She explained that many patients diagnosed with subacute thyroiditis had a cold about two to eight weeks before the onset of symptoms.
The doctor named neck pain as one of the main symptoms of subacute thyroiditis. The endocrinologist explained that pain often appears in the thyroid gland, but it can spread to the ear or lower jaw. In this case, the pain increases when he swallows or moves the head.
The mechanism of development of the disease is the inflammatory response of the thyroid gland to viral agents. In this case, his cells will be destroyed by releasing a lot of his hormones into the blood. This leads to a temporary increase in gland function. During this time, a person complains of tachycardia, sweating, anxiety, rapid heartbeat, and weight loss. This stage is often followed by an asymptomatic decrease in organ function – hypothyroidism, the expert explained.
This condition usually goes away, but in rare cases, hypothyroidism becomes chronic, said the endocrinologist. In this case, a person can experience lethargy, cold intolerance, swelling or constipation.
Earlier, sports doctor and traumatologist Vikram Murthy dispelled popular myths about ARVI. One of the main myths identified by Murthy is the claim that immunity can be “boosted” and that flu vaccines are ineffective.
