The Russian Orthodox Church has prepared regulations for the expulsion of demons

The Russian Orthodox Church will tell you how to properly expel demons

The prepared document contains both the history of this practice and proposals for its unification and regulation.

The Theology Commission of the Russian Orthodox Church has prepared a document regulating the practice of exorcism (casting out demons), Metropolitan Hilarion, head of the department for external church relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, told RIA Novosti.

According to Hilarion, now the practice of exorcism does not exist in all local churches. The prepared document contains both the history of this practice and proposals for its unification and regulation.

At the same time, Hilarion stressed that until the official publication of the document he could not disclose its content.

In August 2020, Archimandrite German, a resident of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, died of coronavirus. The media wrote that he was the only priest in Russia who was officially allowed by the Russian Orthodox Church to conduct rituals of exorcism.

At the end of 2020, Hilarion, on behalf of the Russian Orthodox Church, asked the faithful not to carry out the rituals of exorcism on their own, emphasizing that this can only be done by a special priest with the special blessing of the bishop. He also noted that it should not be confused with the frenzy of suspicion of a person’s possible mental disorders.

Work on a document regulating exorcism has been in progress since 2015.
