Russia has begun withdrawing its “peacekeeping forces” from Nagorno-Karabakh.
This information was confirmed at the briefing by the spokesman of the Russian president, Dmytro Peskov.
“Yes, it really is”– Interfax quotes Peskov.
Earlier, a number of Armenian and Azerbaijani mass media reported that the process of withdrawing the Russian “peacekeeping contingent” temporarily stationed in Karabakh from Azerbaijan had begun. As News.am writes with reference to diplomatic sources, this will be done in stages.
The contingent was in the region on the basis of a tripartite agreement between Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia signed on November 10, 2020. According to the agreement, the Russians were supposed to stay in Karabakh until 2025.
According to Russian mass media, the contingent includes 1,960 military personnel equipped with small arms, 90 armored personnel carriers and 380 units of automobile and special equipment.
We will remind, on September 19, 2023, Azerbaijan started anti-terrorist measures in Nagorno-Karabakh to restore the constitutional order.
Already on September 20, the parties agreed on a truce, Karabakh declared a ceasefire and disarmament.
The President of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic signed a decree on the termination of its existence from January 1, 2024.
Earlier, the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, said that he does not see any advantages in the long-term presence of Russian military bases in the country.
