The Russian Federation adopted a law on withdrawal from the Open Skies Treaty

On Wednesday, May 19, the State Duma of the Russian Federation adopted a bill submitted by Russian President Vladimir Putin to denounce the Open Skies Treaty.

About it informs press service of the Russian parliament. As indicated in the explanatory materials, the reason for denunciation of the DON was the US decision to withdraw from this multilateral treaty, which grants its participants the right to fly over each other’s territories to monitor military activities.

Recall that earlier the Russian government officially approved the exit of the country from the Open Skies Treaty. Later Putin introduced a bill to the State Duma about leaving Don.

Let us clarify that in the event of withdrawal from the treaty, Russia will not be able to perform inspection overflights of the territories of the countries participating in the agreement, as well as receive from them access to the data collected during the flights.

The Open Skies Treaty was signed on March 24, 1992 in Helsinki (Finland) by 27 CSCE member states (since 1995 – the OSCE). The Treaty established the Open Skies Advisory Commission, whose decisions are taken by consensus. In Russia, it came into force in 2002.

As reported OBOZREVATEL, 22 November 2020 USA ceased to be a participant Open Skies Treaties.
