Promising athlete
Maria showed herself well at the beginning of her professional career. In the 2009/10 season, the 22-year-old biathlete made her debut at the IBU International Cup, where she reached the top ten several times. Things at Demidova’s house went even better. At the 2010 Russian championship, the athlete won several medals, including gold in the relay at the Uvat stage. The company then consisted of eminent athletes Anna Bogaliy and Olga Medvedtseva.
For a rookie, the biathlete performed quite well and clearly had good potential, but she apparently didn’t want to reveal it. In 2012, the young athlete unexpectedly announced her retirement. After a while, she Maria resumed training, but it is not known whether the girl she intended to return to the ski slope: she the athlete soon died tragically.
A terrible tragedy in Omsk night
In the late evening of July 28, 2013, the athlete was riding along the Prospekt Mira roadway in Omsk. To get home, Demidova decided to cross the six-lane road. At the same time, she Maria grossly violated traffic rules: she crossed the roadway in the wrong place. At the same time, the biathlete did not descend, as required by the rules.
This violation has led to dramatic consequences. Halfway through, the biathlete was hit by a red foreign car. As a result of the collision, the bicycle broke in half, and Demidova herself died of her injuries right on the roadway before the arrival of the doctors.
The driver, who became an unwitting participant in the accident, did not hide. He tried to help the athlete and even promptly called the police and an ambulance, but they did not have time to come to the rescue. By a strange coincidence, the man driving the vehicle turned out to be Maria’s schoolmate.
– Yes, we studied in parallel classes, talked. I did not recognize Masha when I got out of the car after the accident and ran to her. We haven’t met for a long time. The next day, mutual friends reported that it was Masha Demidova. I didn’t even believe it right away. When he checked her pulse, he noticed a petal-shaped tattoo on her stomach. Then I found Masha on social networks. In one of the photos it was her with the same tattoo. It’s just a nightmare! – the young man later said in an interview.
A strange coincidence gave rise to nasty rumors about a deliberate hit and run on Demidov. But law enforcement did not see a crime in the man’s actions: he did not violate the speed limit and did not leave the crime scene. Police also saw no signs of intent. The victim was found guilty of the tragedy.
