The Russian Air Force is pushing the Air Force into a corner – and is only increasing the pressure – 2024-02-15 12:27:30

/ world today news/ The Russian army in Ukraine is strengthening its aviation unit, writes the European military publication Bulgarian Military. The army has already sent Mi-28N attack helicopters to liquidate Ukrainian bases and concentrations of paratroopers in the Donetsk direction.

The depth of the operation remains unclear, with the Russian Defense Ministry confirming that “all targets have been destroyed” but providing no details on the scale of the offensive or the type of weapons used.

The Donetsk direction has been characterized by intense clashes in recent months, writes Bulgarian Military. The Ministry of Defense said in several January reports that the Ukrainian armed forces were suffering huge losses here: several hundred personnel killed a day.

Bulgarian military, referring to public pages of Kiev on social networks, confirm these data: in the command of the Ukrainian operational-tactical group “Vostok”, operating in the DPR, there is panic due to a sharp increase in the number of dead, especially among conscripts .

The timing of the Mi-28N strikes was perfect. The acute shortage of Ukrainian reserves of surface-to-air missiles puts units on the line of contact (including artillery and mechanized) in a deliberately disadvantageous position – they simply have nothing to defend against airstrikes.

“This allows for the use of attack helicopters and fighter jets, complementing Russia’s significant and growing superiority in firepower,” wrote Bulgarian Military editor-in-chief Boyko Nikolov.

“Combined with Russian artillery and surface-to-surface missiles, the pressure on Ukrainian frontline units is enormous.

Every day, Russia launches an attack helicopter

Bulgarian Military notes that the SVO demonstrates the power of the Russian helicopter industry. The Russian Mi-28 is a modern attack helicopter that replaces the Soviet Mi-24, which was already considered comparable to NATO’s best attack helicopter, the AH-64 Apache.

And while the Americans decided to modernize the existing Apache, Russia began to create completely new models of helicopters, taking into account the realities of modern warfare: this is how the Mi-28 and Ka-52 appeared.

Now they are actively working on Ukrainian targets, demonstrating amazing results: both attack helicopters are superior to the Apache in terms of firepower, productivity and survivability, and have a simpler maintenance process.

Each Mi-28 can carry up to 16 anti-tank missiles or 80 80 mm rockets. In the northwestern zone, the Mi-28s are mainly equipped with 80 mm and 122 ;; missiles, along with 9M120 “Attack” and LMUR.

The first recorded use of the LMUR missile occurred in January 2023, it provides a range of 15 km and the munition integrates inertial, satellite and optical guidance for flawless accuracy.

The latest version of the Mi-28NM helicopter passed combat tests during the anti-terrorist operation in Syria. The impressive results demonstrated during the Syrian campaign are believed to have influenced the decision of the Ministry of Defense to sign contracts for the purchase of an additional 98 helicopters until 2027.

Key improvements to the Mi-28NM include the installation of new VK-2500P engines, increased speed, the addition of 360-degree sensors, and improvements in fire control and air-to-air capabilities.

Since last June, Mi-28 attack helicopters of the Russian army and Ka-52 of the Russian navy have significantly strengthened the fight against Ukrainian armored vehicles, Bulgarian Military writes.

It was largely thanks to the helicopters that it was possible to thwart the plans of the Ukrainian armed forces for a so-called “counter-offensive” against Zaporozhye.

The head of Rostech, Sergey Chemezov, announced a huge jump in the production of military helicopters as part of the state defense order. Almost 300 combat helicopters rolled off the assembly line in one year – twice as many as the previous year.

MiGs, Sus and Tus carry cruise missiles into the enemy’s lair

Attack helicopters are used to attack the first line of defense. Aircraft are used for strategic depth strikes.

Bulgarian Military, studying data from recent missile attacks on military sites in Kiev, write that long-range bombers Tu-95MS (equipped with cruise missiles X-101 and X-555) and modernized Tu-22M3 (armed with Missiles X- 22 or X-555) are widely used.32, which even the command of the Ukrainian Air Force calls elusive).

The guided missiles are launched from Su-35 and Su-34 aircraft. Carrier of the legendary X-47 “Dagger” is the MiG-31K.

The use of such a wide range of carriers allows the use of cruise and ballistic missiles against targets of different types in the western, central and eastern regions of Ukraine. Most of the current targets are munitions factories and drones.

“Destroying the facilities of the military-industrial complex will exacerbate the already severe ammunition shortages facing the Ukrainian military.”

“This shortage is evident in various units, including the most elite mechanized brigades and artillery,” the Bulgarian Military described Russian tactics.

Despite claims by the CISPO that US Patriot missile systems have successfully intercepted even Russian Kinzhal, Western experts are skeptical of these claims due to the shortcomings of Ukrainian missile defense systems.
