The ruling Japanese party will nominate the former Foreign Minister as Prime Minister / Article

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party in Japan has elected former Foreign Minister Fumio Kisida as its new leader. It will be his job to lead the party in the forthcoming parliamentary elections, and it is likely that he will be confirmed as the next head of the Japanese government on 4 October.

Significantly, Kisida will be the 100th Prime Minister in Japanese history. This was not Kisid’s first attempt to gain the reins of the party, but a year ago he lost to former Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga in a vote.

Once again, the fight has proved to be very tense, as in the first round of voting he was only one vote ahead of government minister Taro Kono, who is currently in charge of the Covid-19 vaccination campaign in Japan.

One of the main tasks of Fumio Kisida is the need to restore confidence in a party whose reputation is suffered severely during the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, the next prime minister is expected to continue Yoshihide Species’s policies and no radical changes in defense, economic and foreign policies are expected.
