He wanted to be sure that his invention did not break the rules. And he dealt with the IBU of the International Biathlon Union until the union changed the rules because of his case and prevented similar changes.
“Now I’m very serious about it. I had intensive discussions with the IBU throughout the winter. At the end of October, she had a technical meeting where she made changes to the rules just before the start of the season. And the new rule prohibits my editing,” the Olympic champion and three-time world champion complained to NRK.
According to him, the IBU explained its position by saying that with this change it is not clear whether the magazine is loaded or not.
“These changes are intended to eliminate any uncertainty regarding the handling of magazines to ensure strict adherence to safety guidelines. Further possible changes to the rules will be assessed at the next meeting of the technical committee this spring,” explained IBU sports director Daniel Böhm to NRK.
But Christiansen doesn’t want to give up. He is said to be still in contact with the IBU and has complained about the rule changes. Now they are trying another solution where they move the magazine further back from the room. “They’re very slow to respond, so I’m really annoyed,” he said, expressing his frustration.
At the same time, he admitted that he also has a bit of a guilty conscience because of the other biathletes who were already using the new regulation and were moving on to this side of the rules which were rather two – meaning. But now they have a problem too. “It didn’t just affect me. But there are others who have been using this method for a long time,” he admitted.
“Of course I understand that it looks loaded, but others have used it. I have pictures for it. I have been traveling around Europe a bit this year taking pictures to ask the IBU if this and that scene is full. I was looking for where the boundary was and how close the reservoir could be,” he explained.
And he made no secret of the fact that he was very upset about the development of the whole thing. “Do I get a little angry? Yes, I’m very angry,” he admitted. “I think it’s wrong to change the rules that affect athletes just a few weeks before the start of the season. They could announce that with effect immediately from next season.”
His partner and biathlon expert on NRK television Ola Lunde objected that the IBU would hardly be beneficial in this case. “Security issues are inevitable. I understand that the IBU is careful about this. The way the Vetle magazine looks, it almost looks like it’s already plugged in. And that’s not okay. It’s not just dangerous, but it can cause problems. “Suddenly, people would start using loaded magazines and that is absolutely forbidden,” Lunde warned.
