We all have those days when things just don’t come naturally. Bicycle tire flat, missed train, negative feedback on an assignment, lost wallet. That work. If someone pushes in front of you in the supermarket, it’s a small step to get out of your way. But it is not necessarily mentally healthy, says American psychiatrist Daniel G. Amen. How do you deal with such days? For this purpose he invented the ‘Rule of 12’.

It seems to be a common complaint: ‘The fuse seems to be getting shorter and shorter.’ Especially during the corona pandemic, many people had no choice. But intense situations still often appear in the news, involving people on the street like this really get out of their waythat even bystanders are shocked.

Although that goes beyond all bounds, life can be quite frustrating for everyone from time to time. The American psychiatrist Daniel G. Amen has come up with a trick that can help you calm down at times like this and make you take a deep breath.

‘Rule of 12’ viewed thousands of times on TikTok

He recently shared the ‘Rule of 12’ on his TikTok account, where he has millions of followers. The video has now been viewed more than thousands of times. It’s a bit like counting to ten before responding, but over a long period of time.

Every time something happens that causes frustration or anger, you count. You only allow yourself to get really angry the thirteenth time something goes wrong.

‘I’m not going to act like a jerk’

He came up with the idea when he went on holiday to Europe. “And I said to myself, ‘Twelve things are going wrong. But I’m not going to get angry, I’m not going to yell, I’m not going to act like a jerk. Until something goes wrong for the thirteenth time.’ And yes, six things went wrong, but I didn’t get angry.”

During his move, he and his wife had to stretch the ‘Rule of 12’ to 120, he says laughing in an additional video.

It is the perspective that changes, he explains. “The more you appreciate that difficult things happen, as it were, the more you learn to accept it and the healthier you are psychologically.”
