KANSAS CITY (AP) – The Kansas City Royals’ clubs exploded for 11 points in the sixth inning against Luis Castillo, who just signed a hefty contract with Seattle, in a 13-12 win on Sunday that cost the Mariners the chance to rise in the contested standings for an American League wild card.
Mitch Haniger scored twice during an eight-run fifth inning for the Mariners, leading 11-2 before the bottom of the sixth. But Castillo got into trouble and Michael Massey scored and led in four runs during the Royals’ most prolific innings since 2004.
The Mariners remained in third place in the wild card race, mid-game behind Tampa Bay. Seattle remains four games ahead of Baltimore for last place in the American League playoffs.
Castillo, an All-Star traded from Cincinnati to the mid-season Mariners, has landed a $ 108 million five-year contract that begins next season. The deal was announced on Saturday.
