The Royal Navy’s Escorted Russian Warships and Submarines in British Waters: Impact of Russian Invasion and Increased Interceptions of Russian Aircraft in NATO Skies

“In 2021, the Royal Navy escorted 66 Russian warships in British waters. In 2022, 41 ships were escorted. During this period, the Royal Navy also located and tracked several Russian submarines in the British maritime zone in order to warn against entering “sensitive” waters “, – said the Deputy Minister of Defense.

British experts argue that the recent reduction in the number of Russian ships and submarines in British waters is due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which is draining the resources of the aggressor country.

The British Navy also noted that, despite the reduction in the number of sighted ships, they are very closely watching Russian ships, which can interfere with submarine cables and underwater infrastructure – power lines, oil and gas pipelines.

Interceptions of Russian aircraft in the skies of NATO countries

In recent months, the number of cases of aircraft interception in the skies of NATO member countries has increased.

So, on July 4, Britain raised its RAF Typhoon combat aircraft in Estonia in order to intercept Russian aircraft.

Earlier it was reported that as of June 25, the fighters of the Alliance countries intercepted more than 20 Russian aircraft in three weeks.

The United States also intercepted strategic bombers of the Russians, the Russian Federation sent its Tu-95s to the Alaska region.
