“Did you know that the King is the first British monarch to be a qualified diver? In 1975, His Majesty took a half-hour dive under the Arctic ice at Resolute Bay, Canada,” the royal family wrote alongside several photos of Charles in a diving suit. “Years later, the King submerged nine times on the Mary Rose, Henry VIII’s warship, before being lifted from the seabed in 1982,” read a second post with more photos.
Charles passed this hobby on to his sons. For example, Prince William and Kate Middleton shared photos of a dive at South Water Caye during their tour in the Caribbean last year. “On Sunday we were lucky enough to dive South Water Caye, right above the spectacular Belize Barrier Reef. It was a privilege to see firsthand the world-leading work being done here to protect the oceans,” they wrote in a video on Instagram at the time.
In November last year, Prince Harry also took a dip in Hawaii with American veteran Gabriel, who had to have his arm amputated after a motorcycle accident. The moment was captured on camera and can be seen in ‘Heart of Invictus’, Harry’s most recent documentary. Diving is liberating, the veteran said in People, and therefore has a unique therapeutic effect on his chronic pain. “I was able to talk to Harry about that a lot,” he told ‘People’. “Once he was in the water, it was like having a buddy. Swimming around, having a good time. You could see the smile through the bubbles and all that stuff,” he recalled.
