Flags are usually raised over government buildings on the occasion of the Queen’s birthday, but officials have received instructions that not everyone is required to arrange for this matter this year. The Queen herself is currently staying at Windsor Palace west of London accompanied by her 98-year-old husband, Philip.

Elizabeth was born on April 21, 1926 and assumed the throne in 1952 when she was 25 years old. In September 2015, she passed her grandmother, Queen Victoria, to become Britain’s longest-serving monarch.

Buckingham Palace said last month that an offer, usually held in June to celebrate the Queen’s official birthday, would not be done in a traditional way in light of restrictions on gatherings.
