The exdirector of Balearic Housing Institute (IBAVI) Cristina Ballester Parets has been awarded by the Royal Academy of Arts in London with the 2024 Architecture award for its management of social housing in the Balearic Islands during the last legislature.
The Royal Academy valued Ballester’s work: “It represents remarkable research and collective production of social housing with a regional and climate-responsible focus carried out between 2019 and 2023.” «Ballester oversaw the production of ambitious social housing in the Balearic Islands, with an emphasis on social and environmental sustainability. The buildings prioritize common space and are flexible, reflecting the diverse groups that inhabit them,” said the academy jury.
Ballester worked in collaboration with architect Carles Oliver along with residentsmany leading architectural firms, economists, politicians, manufacturers, local suppliers and policymakers.
«They have developed an extraordinary model for build equitably, restoring local materials supply and manufacturing chains in addition to being responsible with the climate,” declared the jury of the Royal Academy.
