ANNOUNCEMENTS•
The launching of the rowing lifeboat on Terschelling is included in the list of intangible heritage in the Netherlands. This is at the request of the Terschelling Museum Lifeboat Foundation, he writes Omrop Fryslan.
The tradition was almost lost, but thanks to donations and volunteers, since 2012 a rowing lifeboat has been pulled four times a year up the Terschelling dunes by horses and rowers and released into the sea via the beach. A maximum of ten horses, ten oarsmen and a skipper are needed to haul the Secretary Schumacher lifeboat out to sea.
Shipwrecked
The rowing lifeboat from 1900 is the only operational example in the Netherlands. In the past it was used to rescue shipwrecked people, today only to keep the tradition alive.
There are now more than 200 Dutch customs and traditions on the intangible heritage list. From the Indian tradition of the rice table to flower parades. The status is an acknowledgment of the Knowledge Center for Intangible Heritage and aims to protect heritage.
