Warning: The following contains spoilers for The Rookie season 4, episode 9, “Breakdown,” which aired on Sunday, December 12 on ABC.
The Rookie He won’t be back for a few weeks, but his winter finale gave fans a lot to think about. Like last week’s penultimate episode, “Breakdown” covered a number of different story lines. Wesley finally got rid of Elijah’s thumb with the addition of a new and old villain, and Sergeant Bradford had to grapple with his traumatic past. Additionally, Officer Nolan and Detective Harper uncovered information about their partners that could be problematic in the future.
Officer Nolan wants to propose to Bailey … But is she married !?
Nolan has been spending a lot of time with his firefighter friend Bailey in recent episodes, and it’s clear that things have gotten serious between them. In fact, “Breakdown” opened with him and Chen making a comedic arrest at a jewelry store where they – along with their suspect, discussed engagement rings for Bailey. After that, Nolan wanted advice on how to propose. Chen told him he had to go big, while Harper thought small and personal was the way to go.

Throughout the entire process, Nolan was clearly overwhelmed and tried not to compromise, but when she decided to let her son Henry meet her, it was clear that a proposal was brewing. Between different time zones, work hours, and spotty internet connections, it took several tries before Henry could meet Bailey, but after they finally spoke, Henry quickly gave his father his blessing.
Then at the end of the episode, Nolan began chatting with Bailey at an outdoor cafe. The music, the atmosphere, and the timing were just right; I was going to ask the question, but suddenly the music stopped. Bailey greeted someone who had just arrived and it turned out to be her husband, who had just gotten out of jail. Nolan’s jaw dropped as the screen went black.
Detective Harper heads into another nasty custody battle
Last week, Harper learned that her ex-husband, Donavan, wanted to move to San Francisco and take their daughter with him and her fiancé. At first, she thought there was nothing she could do, but after Agent Thorsen encouraged her, she decided to defend herself. Donavan played dirty during her last custody battle using Harper’s undercover work to make her look like an absent mother, so this time, she decided to play dirty too.
He tasked his lawyer with looking for dirty laundry on Donavan, but could not find any. However, the lawyer did find dirty laundry on Donavan’s fiancée, Penelope. Turns out, she was a former sex worker and hadn’t told her new fiancé about her old job. Harper tried to get on the right track one last time and offered to stay with his daughter for the school year, while Donavan stayed with her for the summer, but Donavan refused to commit. So Harper used the dirt to his advantage.
Unfortunately, his decision backfired. Donavan broke up with Penelope for lying, and the move was canceled. However, her daughter was devastated when Penelope left, and it was all Harper’s fault.
