The Ronaldo Effect, an ugly Messi and all the other highlights from the weekend
At PSG it gets messy thanks to Lionel
Lionel Messi is still not doing as it should at Paris Saint-Germain. The Argentine, who is expected to receive 110 million euros at PSG in three years, is still without a goal participation after three games and even suffered the shame of being replaced yesterday in the top game against Xherdan Shaqiris Lyon.
The Argentine was not happy about this, refused to shake hands with coach Mauricio Pocchettino and then pulled a “lap” on the substitutes’ bench.
After all, there was still a happy ending for PSG. In the 92nd minute, Mauro Icardi – he was only substituted in for Angel di Maria in the 82nd minute – scored a 2-1 win.
Red for vigilante justice
Curious scenes in Israel. In the game between Maccabi Petach Tikwa and Hapoel Tel Aviv, stoppage time is already running when a spectator storms the pitch. The young man ran onto the field with very bad intentions and knocked a Hapoel player in the back from behind.
When he subsequently wants to tamper with Adi Gotlieb, the latter defends himself and stretches the forward with a slap in the face so that the security can catch him. But the action also has consequences for Gotlieb: He actually sees the red card for his vigilante justice.
Under current
Admittedly, goalkeepers are more likely to make mistakes in such listings than with saves. Jacob Widell Zetterström did so well over the weekend that he deserves his place here. The 23-year-old Swede is in goal at Djurgaardens IF, this season he has played 6 times in 12 games to zero and thus a large part of the fact that Djurgaardens leads the Swedish league Allsvenskan.
In the top game against Malmö at the weekend, Zetterström didn’t play to zero, but with three big saves he saved his team the 1-1 win.
Just next to it is also over
Ravel Morrison, 22, plays in the English Championship for Derby County. This season the attacking midfielder has not yet scored a goal, against Stoke it finally happened at the weekend. At least that’s what the fans thought, and probably he himself too, when he saw the empty gate …
So beautiful
The dog is going crazy in the pan, what preparatory work! In George Bello’s 3-1 goal for Atlanta United against DC United, particular respect goes to Marcelino Moreno. The midfielder dribbles past the opponents on the right side as if they were slalom poles. Bello then only needs to slide in the middle.
What a torpedo
Mukhammad Sultonov has obviously chosen the right club. The Russian plays for Torpedo Moscow and when he scored a 1-0 lead against FK Orenburg, the name of the club was program when he carved a cross into the corner with a direct tap. Sultonov was also responsible for the 2-0 win in the closing stages and was definitely the match winner.
The Ronaldo Effect
Juventus Turin are still without a win after four match days in Serie A and are ranked 18th out of 20 teams with two points. The Turin team were 1-0 up against Milan, but had to be content with a 1-1 draw. This means that Juventus has given three lead in four league games.
Another fact that is striking at Juve’s horror start to the season: the so-called Ronaldo effect. When the Portuguese left Real Madrid in 2018 and moved to Juventus, Real had the worst start to the season in history. Juventus had the best start in club history at the time.
Now Ronaldo moved from Juventus to Manchester United in the summer and Juventus promptly got off to their weakest start to the season in 66 years.
At Manchester United, on the other hand, things have been going on in the league since Ronaldo arrived. He has already scored three goals in his two Premier League games for the Red Devils. In the 2-1 win against West Ham, he also showed his goalkeeper where Mark Noble was going to shoot in the 96th minute of an opposing penalty. Ronaldo was right, De Gea held, United won.
As reliable as the city on Lake Constance
Do you remember April 17th, 2016? Hardly, it was more than five years ago. It’s the date Inaki Williams last missed a league game. The Spaniard has been used in every single game for Athletic Bilbao since then. Overall, he made his 200th game in a row for the Basques at the weekend.
It was too easy for Iota
Diogo Jota will be happy that Liverpool won the game against Crystal Palace 3-0 without any problems. Because the otherwise so accurate Portuguese missed the opening goal towards the end of the first half when he shot the ball into the Liverpool night sky from two meters away.
Sadio Mané did better for it. The Senegalese hit the Liverpool lead shortly after Jota’s miss. For Mané it was the ninth game in a row against Crystal Palace in which he scored a goal. Nobody has done that before in the history of the Premier League.
Whether attack or bus parking, Norwich loses under Farke
What a balance of horror! Norwich City have lost all of their last 15 Premier League games under Daniel Farke. So far this season, the canaries have lost all five games, and in the 2019/2020 season they have also lost the last ten games of the season. In the intervening year in the championship, Norwich has shown itself to be extremely strong under Farke and has made it back to the top as champions.
