“I have decided to resign,” the prime minister said in a televised address.
“My decision should make it clear that I am not holding office. I have national interests before party or personal interests,” he added.
In the elections on Sunday, December 6, the left-wing opposition Social Democratic Party (PSD) received 30% of the vote, leaving PNL in second place with 25.5%.
However, the Liberals could continue to rule within the center-right coalition, given that President Klaus Johann has indicated that the PSD will not nominate a candidate for prime minister.
PNL is an opportunity to form a government along with the newly formed center-right alliance USR-Plus, which has won 15% of the vote.
PNL could also become an ally of the UDMR, which represents the Hungarian minority. This party has won 6% of the vote.
32% of eligible voters took part in the elections, a record low in the history of parliamentary elections.
Voter turnout has been higher abroad, with around 260,000 Romanians voting, twice as many as in 2016.
The leader of the PNL promised in the election campaign to continue the current pro-European path and to modernize Romania.
