NEW YORK – Many questions remain months after police arrested a couple of suspected murderers in the May killing of a former TSA worker a few blocks from his home, but a new accusation shared by prosecutors begins to shed some light on the action taken by the couple that night.
Richard Barrett and Irene Brown are expected to return to court in January after facing a Brooklyn judge last week over the gunshot death of 45-year-old Donovan Davy, who has worked at JFK Airport for nearly 20 years. If convicted of murder, each faces a maximum sentence of 25 years.
An indictment filed last week alleges that Barrett, the killer, and Brown, the escape driver, killed Davy on the night of May 29 in a rear-end murder in East Flatbush.
Davy was running a quick errand in his neighborhood shortly after midnight when police said Barrett snuck in behind him and shot him in the neck. Davy was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he died.
After pulling the trigger, investigators claim Barrett jumped into the runaway car driven by Brown. The Brooklyn District Attorney said video surveillance shows a Nissan Maxima taking Barrett to the crime scene and then taking him away.
“The cell phone data allegedly also links Barrett and Brown to the vehicle, which surveillance shows following an unsuspecting Davy traveling through downtown Brooklyn on foot and by bus,” reads a statement from the DA’s office. .
Finally Barrett and Brown Were arrested by the police on September 1, months after his alleged role in Davy’s murder.
Brown, who owns the car, changed the car’s license plate about a week after the shooting, District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said. The couple were arrested in the same car.
Both defendants were held without bail and are expected to return to court on 11 January. Information from Barrett and Brown’s attorney was not immediately available.
Davy was only two blocks from the family apartment when the fatal shots were fired.
“I had this feeling, like let me call my brother, because it was taking too long,” said his sister, Poshana Davy, of the call she made to her brother the last time she spoke to him. .
He said he heard “three or four shots” while on the phone with him.
“I ran to where the sirens were and I ran to see my brother undergo CPR,” said his sister. “I had no reason to be cowardly hit in the back of the head.”
People close to Davy call him a family-oriented person and a hard worker. Her sister said that she was looking forward to 20 years of work.
