Whether through recreation centers, daycares, class delegates, or student unions, she discovered that popular education actors were everywhere. Today, as a facilitator at the JB4 association, Virginie acknowledges that popular education is an integral part of her life.

Virginie’s career journey, from civic service to the Local Mission and obtaining her diploma as a facilitator, has allowed her to embrace the values encountered along the way. She explains, “Popular education is full of mentors and advisers who carry values of solidarity and advocate for the personal development of citizens. It’s emancipating, allowing you to have self-confidence and enrich yourself humanly.” At 30 years old, Virginie proudly states, “I’m proud to have my BPJEP; it’s what I dreamed of doing since I was 20.” She emphasizes the importance of maintaining the professional side of popular education, as it often tends to be associated with its playful aspects, while the deep values are sometimes overlooked.

In Saint-Denis, the planning of popular education is a crucial endeavor. To address this, ten actors from Reunion were invited to a two-day seminar on the role of popular education in the Dionysian territory. Brigitte Adame, 2nd assistant in charge of community life and citizen participation, highlights the transformative power of these actors in society through culture, sport, leisure, and history. She emphasizes the need to rely on them and other stakeholders to meet the challenges of popular education successfully.

During the seminar, the “network heads” of popular education focused on four specific themes: popular education and citizenship, popular education and neighborhood associations, popular education and the environment, and popular education and youth. Emmanuelle Sanson, director of Fedep, considers these subjects as major. The seminar highlighted the importance of collaboration, co-construction, and the establishment of a roadmap and objectives in partnership with the city. By working together, more efficient initiatives can be implemented on the territory, improving the daily work of popular education.

In Saint-Denis, popular education holds a strong and well-anchored position, with approximately 2,000 associations existing in the capital. However, only 550 of these associations are subsidized by the town hall. Brigitte Adame aims to integrate the remaining associations into the subsidy system in the long term. The roadmap for popular education in Saint-Denis has been launched, with the ultimate goal of fostering a society where people can live together while respecting the values of citizenship. Brigitte Adame acknowledges that this transformation will take time, possibly 15, 20, or even 30 years, but the work starts today.
