Dr. Beatrice Anghel, primary radiotherapy doctor, explained how the tumor tissue is destroyed when brachytherapy is used, so that the areas around the tumors are not affected. Brachytherapy is the therapy used to treat locally advanced cervical cancer. “We all know that we use ionizing radiation to kill the oncological genetic material, that is, the tumor genetic material. How does this translate? In DNA, tumor DNA. We break those connections in the tumor which are, of course, surrounded by lymphatic blood vessels, let’s say a microsystem, a microenterprise there that we manage to destroy by placing these ionizing radiations. In the radio-sensitization chapter, that agent called platinum salt manages to bind to these agents, destroying the genetic material as well. So somehow they are complementary therapies and yet they manage to reach where we direct them. Basically, it is an infusion with hydration, that is, some serums are put that have the liquid component water, in a sterile environment, with some anti-emetic agents, so that the patient is not sick, to prevent a possible allergic reaction. Any new agent that has not been administered to a patient before must be done with care and, of course, with a careful monitoring of parameters such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature”, explained Dr. Anghel.
She was asked if these salts accumulate in the pathogenic tissue, the tumor tissue. “We cannot say that the proportion is 100%, a fact for which we can mention here possible side effects, because, being an agent administered intravascularly, so in a lumen, in a vein, you realize that it reaches the bloodstream, throughout the body and then there will be a cascade of desired reactions, but also some slightly undesirable ones, which of course we control with medication, with drugs”, answered the doctor. After the administration of these salts, the irradiation is carried out with “a complex device, a particle accelerator”. “We use this accelerator as a weapon, which is multi-functional. It includes not only the formation of particles that we want, for example photons, which we use with the aim of irradiating tumors, but also a series of small specifications, such as imaging, which we use in real time, how we treat . We can either have an x-ray, we can have a mini tomograph”, Dr. Anghel also said.
