The Role of Music in Social Work with Young People: Diploma Thesis from Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences

Diploma thesis from 2007 in the field of social education / social work, grade: 1.7, Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences, 69 sources in the bibliography, language: German, abstract: Every human society makes music. All over the world, across all cultures, from members of a primitive tribe to academics in industrialized nations, people drum, sing and compose. Archaeological finds have shown that early humans used musical instruments up to 600,000 years ago. So music is not only international, but also a very early element of human development. In addition, the use of music is common in almost all situations in human life. Music is accompaniment, inspiration and incentive in cult acts, medicine, war, love or is used as a stimulant in supermarkets. A special area of music is its connection with the phase of youth. The transition from childhood to adulthood is almost always marked by conflicts with older generations. This conflict between young and old often finds expression in a youth (sub)culture that also identifies itself through music and sets itself apart from the adult world. This makes music interesting for social work with young people. In this work I try to explain in more detail the aspects associated with the use of music in social work. The main focus is on the development and implementation of music projects with young people.
