The Role of Motherhood and Family Dynamics in “Back Home”

Yes, motherhood is a very powerful part of this book. I am the mother of three children and, personally, it is something that I have very much in mind. But as a writer, I like to write about different generations, the present, the past, and the complexity of families. We are always connected and the character of each person influences others. This is seen in “Back Home”: Nora and her character is the result of her parents and her family, but she has the particular way of being the mother of Polly (her daughter of hers) and of Jess (her granddaughter of hers). On the other hand, Polly, as the mother of Jess, makes very difficult decisions: at first we judge them, but then we understand her.
