The Role of Families in the Prevention of HIV / AIDS

TIMESINDONESIA, ACEH – HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, a virus that can cause a condition called AIDS. A person who is infected with HIV can make him experience AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome), PLWHA (People with HIV / AIDS).

The whole world community is focused on the Covid – 19 Pandemic which is an actual problem at this time, HIV / AIDS is also a major world problem due to an increase in cases, including in Indonesia.

Since Covid-19 became a world pandemic, HIV / AIDS has sunk even though its spread continues, especially through sexual relations within and outside of marriage with people with HIV / AIDS with the condition that men do not use condoms. Apart from that, other risk factors are blood transfusions that are not screened for HIV, syringes that are used in rotation, such as drug abusers (narcotics and hazardous substances), and through the breast milk (ASI) of women with HIV / AIDS.

HIV / AIDS sufferers are scattered almost all over Indonesia. The estimated number of HIV / AIDS cases in Indonesia is 640,443, but it has been detected since 1987 up to. 31 March 2020 only 511,955 or 79.94 percent. This frightening disease is a serious threat in our country, if the root cause of contracting this virus is not handled quickly together.

The importance of early childhood education for adolescents

Adolescents are an age group that is very vulnerable to the risk of triad (three main problems) of adolescent reproductive health, namely, sexuality (free sex), HIV / AIDS, and the abuse of Narcotics and illegal drugs, Indonesia has a lot of potential to educate adolescents by positive and productive program.

Indonesian people are often shocked by the rise of online protistusi, the existence of LGBT communities and other sexuality deviations, drug abuse crimes, all of which have the potential to transmit HIV / AIDS and destroy the young generation with various modes used from the use of current scientific advances.

Not to mention the problem of stigma and discrimination that is still thick in society against PLWHA, people with HIV / AIDS who always see this disease from an ethical and social perspective, how people living with HIV are so shunned by society and even their families make the sufferer worse.

Even though some PLWHA are not aware that they are infected, not because of association but because they are infected from their husbands, so that housewives and their children who are born are infected need to be serious in finding and searching for the spread of this virus.

Early prevention is needed in the family by teaching teenagers about religion that prohibits acts of immorality and carrying out religious orders to avoid such acts. The role of parents as role models in the family is very influential on the development of the child.

Giving information or knowledge about HIV / AIDS can be done from an early age to adolescents in the family environment. Children are given information on how HIV / AIDS is transmitted through sperm, vagina, breast milk, and blood. HIV / AIDS also will not be transmitted through physical contact, social contact and so on. Correct information can help prevent adolescents from taking various actions that put HIV at risk.

The aim of providing information from an early age is so that children can avoid the dangers of HIV / AIDS and develop a healthy lifestyle in the family. It is also hoped that adolescents can lead to non-discriminatory behavior against HIV / AIDS sufferers.

Sigelman and colleagues (in Tinsley, Lees, and Sumartojo, 2004; 211) who examined the role of parents in the dissemination of knowledge and attitudes towards HIV in children in grades 3, 5, and 7 (8-14 years). The results obtained include finding a correct understanding of risk behavior and HIV transmission with age. Another result is a significant relationship between parental knowledge and children’s knowledge about the myths of HIV / AIDS transmission. Acceptance of children to PLWHA (people living with HIV / AIDS) is also related to the attitude of parents towards HIV.

The government together with the nation’s components and community participation, institutions both NGOs, formal and non-formal education, Islamic boarding schools, volunteers also greatly influence the dissemination of knowledge on how to prevent HIV / AIDS so that there is no discrimination against people who are HIV / AIDS positive, who are considered as Curse disease from God. If this happens, the spread of HIV / AIDS can be prevented early in order to realize Indonesia’s golden generation in 2045.
