The Ukrainian dam of Nova Kakhovka, controlled by Russia, was hit by bombing by Ukrainian forces.
The Russian state news agency TASS said a representative of the emergency services a missile launched from a US-made HIMARS missile system struck the dam lock and caused damage. According to the emergency official, it is an attempt to create the conditions for a humanitarian disaster by breaching the dam.
The huge Nova Kakhovka dam, which blocks the Dnieper River upstream of Kherson, where Ukrainian forces are advancing, has assumed vital strategic importance in recent weeks.
Both Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly accused him since October plan to breach the dam using explosives, in a move that will flood much of the downstream area, likely causing severe destruction around the city of Kherson.
