Just a few days ago we told you that the film that Arnold Schwzarsenegger most regretted having rejected is ‘The Rock’. The sensational second feature film by Michael Bay ended with Nicolas Cage in the role initially offered to the protagonist of the ‘Terminator’ saga and turned the Oscar-winning actor from ‘Leaving Las Vegas’.
However, it is fair to recognize that the weight of the film falls so much on Sean Connery as in Cage, being also the last great work of the first interpreter who gave life to the legendary James Bond. His charismatic presence adds a lot to ‘The Rock’, but perhaps the most curious thing about his participation in it is that there is a very widespread theory pointing out that it is actually a secret sequel to James Bond. And it is not that there is a lack of elements to defend it.
A shot of action
However, the appeal of ‘The Rock’ goes far beyond that theory, since it is a show in which Bay exhibits all his talent behind the cameras, but he does it with someone behind him, preventing his worst vices from making an appearance and damaging the function. It is true that there are some continuity problems here and there – although in no case as annoying as the stunt doubles in ‘Face to Face’ – but everything is so entertaining that one simply wants to focus on enjoying.
The undeniable chemistry between Cage and Connery giving life to two completely opposite characters brings a very enjoyable energy to the ensemble, but the truth is that the entire spectacular cast – just to identify all the well-known actors who appear, including an almost seen and unseen one of Jim CaviezelI’m sure he’ll keep you entertained – contributes his grain of sand so that we can have a great time, with the unique villain played by Ed Harris as another of the great keys.
To that we add a vibrant soundtrack that immerses you fully in what happens on the screen from that prologue in which it is already clear to the viewer how lethal Gas VX is, the entertaining street runner that is everything that happens in the streets of San Francisco, the violent game of cat and mouse inside Alcatraz or that epic finale in which everything comes down to a decision made at the last second and what we are left with is one of the peaks of action cinema of the 90s.
‘The Rock’ airs tonight at Be Mad starting at 10:15 p.m.but if you want to recover it and that time is not convenient for you, you also have it available in the Disney+ catalog.
