Many of us know, partly from various films, that for many, New York has a reputation for having danger zones; the big city is not saved from the waves of crime, and, especially, in one of its five districts: The bronx. For this reason, the police often try new methods to deal with this evil, and the latest one seems like a thing of science fiction.
It turns out that a robot, developed by the American engineering and robotics company, Boston Dynamics, has recently been used by the NYPD on some missions. The last one was during a raid in the Bronx.
The model of this quadruped was called Digidog (Spot) and something interesting about its origin is that it was not thought exclusively for this purpose, but the success it has already had in other services such as helping in hospitals in the United States throughout the pandemic, has led him to be considered for other tasks.
Digidog weighs 31 kilos, can reach a speed of 5 km / h, climbs stairs, has cameras – very useful in patrols – and has a two-way communication system. And, in case you were wondering, apart from making the operations more efficient, the police have affirmed, to stop New York Post, that its main reason is to save lives.
Although Digidog is still in the testing phase for the police, it seems that the idea is not making everyone very happy, and it is that some people have already stated that this type of expense is not what New York needs at this time.
Whether or not the integration of this Spot called Digidog to the police is formalized, the future of this robot looks promising due to the interest it has aroused in other areas.
